Wilson McCoy - The Phantom - Carlyle’s Good Mark #3 Daily 5-7 1958

Another powerful daily by Wilson McCoy — and one that perfectly captures the suspenseful pacing that made classic newspaper strips so addictive. In this third daily, the story begins unfolding around one of the Phantom’s ancestors, set 100 years before the modern Phantom. McCoy immediately creates tension and mystery: we see the rider enter the jungle, battle bravely against a tiger, and then collapse from his injuries — only to be discovered by hostile jungle criminals moments later. What I love most here is how cinematic the storytelling feels despite the simplicity of the format. Each panel escalates the danger, while the final scene leaves you hanging with that classic “what happens next?” feeling that daily strips mastered so well. The second panel especially is pure McCoy brilliance — bold composition, dramatic motion, and that unmistakable jungle atmosphere that made his Phantom work so visually iconic. One of the great joys of collecting original daily art is experiencing these stories exactly as readers once did: one suspenseful moment at a time, waiting for tomorrow’s strip to continue the adventure.
