This particular strip is a major moment within the story itself, marking the first appearance of the Bandar in this adventure — the mysterious jungle tribe most feared throughout the Deep Woods and fiercely loyal to The Phantom. For longtime Phantom fans, the Bandar would go on to become one of the most important supporting tribes in Phantom mythology. Their sudden arrival here is unforgettable: “Suddenly, silently, out of nowhere…” McCoy’s atmosphere in this panel is exceptional. The tension, the silence, and the reaction of the surrounding tribes perfectly establishes the Bandar as something almost mythical from their very first appearance in the storyline. I especially love how this sequence reinforces one of the great themes of classic Phantom lore — that even the most feared jungle tribes stand behind and protect The Ghost Who Walks.
