Wilson McCoy - The Phantom - Carlyle’s Good Mark #9 Daily 5-14 1958

Day 9 really expands the scale of the Phantom mythology, and Wilson McCoy does an incredible job building atmosphere throughout the strip. What I especially love is the large third panel — the way the message travels “over valleys and mountains” through the jungle gives such a strong sense that the Phantom’s world is alive and connected far beyond what we normally see. Even while injured and unconscious, the Phantom’s presence commands an entire network responding to him. The repeated “Phantom hurt needs Bandar” chant also creates a great sense of urgency and movement across the daily.
