Description

The first Green Lantern comic I ever owned was a back issue from the legendary Adams/O’Neil run, setting the stage for Hal Jordan to become my favorite character.

So, getting any page from the "Hard-Traveling Heroes" run would be a thrill. But issue #84 is extra special because it was inked by some guy named Bernie Wrightson, which – as I learned who Wrightson was – kind of blew my mind. Turns out, #84 shared the same cover date as House of Secrets #92. So Wrightson was inking Neal Adams' Green Lantern while simultaneously penciling the debut appearance of Swamp Thing.

Whaaat?!

The article linked below also points out that the “Ka-looota” sound effect for the mind-control gas was an inside nod to a young Mike Kaluta, whose name Adams found amusing.

I’ve spent years upgrading the beat-up, corner-cut copies I found in discount bins as a kid with high-grade copies. Finally adding a true piece of original art from this definitive, socially conscious run is an unbelievable feeling.

Over the years, I’ve replaced the beat-up, corner-cut copies I pulled from discount bins as a kid with high-quality, graded copies (accompanying photo).

To say I am thrilled to add OA from this historic run to my collection is an understatement.

Shout out to Mr. Burkey  for helping to make this happen.

Thanks, Tom. Super-happy about this. Something I never thought I would be able to get.

You might as well add Kaluta in it as another legend tied to this page and story!

Was just thinking about the fact that your very first GL/GA comic was from this run.  That set the bar pretty high going forward.  Lucky it didn't ruin you for every other artist who worked on the book.  Anyway, congratulations on your grail.  As a lifelong Neal Adams fan, I am green with envy.

Amazing page. I've loved the O'Neal/Adams GL/GA book since I first discovered it decades agao. Having a page inked by Wrightson just makes it that much better. Congrats!

Thanks Bob. The Wrightson-inked pages have taken some cristism over the years, but I think the history and quirkiness of how this happened makes it special.

Wrightson was a surprisingly good inker on Neal.  Beautiful page.  Huge congrats!!

Never read the issue, but reading the dialogue on this, I can see it being ahead of its time (and oddly prescient as well).  Insane to think it's also an Adams/Wrightson collaboration.  Congrats on the pickup!
