When I started collecting art in the late 1990's, getting a really good Starlin Warlock page was high on the list. Starlin blew my little 12-year-old mind with those stories and I just thought that my collection would never be complete without a page from that series.

Not too long after that, Glen Gold put this little beauty up on eBay and I thought it fit the bill quite nicely. Somehow I outbid everybody for it. Actually, I've lost way more than I've won, but if I recall, I didn't have a whole lot of competition for this page. I'm not a huge spender and I was even less of one back then, but for this page, I was willing to go up to an astoundingly high $700! (I know, right?) But, hey, it was the most cash I'd ever paid for a page of comic art at that point in time. I guess, a lot of other collectors still thought it was a lot of money for a panel page from this era. (Or maybe everybody else just missed seeing it.)

Regardless, I have no regrets. And, okay, it doesn't have Thanos or Gamora, whom I'm told are quite popular now, but, who cares, because my page has a cosmic shark! That's right, I typed the words "cosmic SHARK!" Why, you ask, is Warlock being chased by a shark, cosmic or otherwise, through the void of some unknown galaxy? Well, true story, there was a period of time back around the summer of 1976 when, because of the box office success of the movie, "Jaws," every comic book company was legally required to have a shark in each and every one of its comic books, even if that story took place in, you know, outer space. Look it up.

So, yes, cosmic sharks aside, I admit the tale of the Star Thief, of which this is a part, may not have had the lasting impact, story wise, as the Magus Saga, but the art is just as exciting, energetic and fun as anything StarIin & Co. (or anybody else, for that matter) was doing at the time.

Speaking of the art, the pencils Starlin did on this issue were layouts and Steve Leialoha did the finishes. I asked Steve about this page on Facebook, and he said that "finishes" on this page meant that he did "lots of "cosmic noodling," but he also noted that Starlin drew the Warlock figure in the bottom panel "pretty tight."

Needless to say, this page is a keeper and I have it framed and hanging on the wall of my office. I am very lucky to have it.

Yow... another high water mark in the medium. Leialoha is criminally underrated (loved him over Colan, too), and it's staggering what Starlin accomplished in a relatively few issues of this series (and Strange Tales). Thanks for sharing this great example!

A Jim Starlin's WARLOCK page !!!! The Warlock saga is part of Comic books history now . One of the few series I will keep during the next 30 years...Lucky guy you are ! ...and yes ! Steve Leialoha is a great inker (and an excellent artist too....)

I normally do not post two comments to a singular listing. However, Romain's remark from 10 years ago (off of my post 14 years ago) requires an explanation from the 1970s for our non-USA friends . If you go to YouTube and search for Saturday Night Live Land Shark, then you will see the silly joke and reference that I made. Regardless, I should have commented on the original comic art page, and I did not. While the Star Thief was an interesting villain and placed Warlock into some challening situations like his being chased by a cosmic great white shark, Leialoha's inks were impressive. He had to lay a lot of ink onto this page for this space scene. The last panel makes the page even more special. You provided a great background story and keep those coming.

Actually, Thanos and Gamora pages are pretty commonplace in this run. Cosmic sharks though, that's another story.
