Chernabog from Fantasia 1940

This is a huge addition to my collection as a nice Chernabog has been something that has been on my mind for about the last twenty years. June 2007 was the month when available money and available piece aligned. First, I found the image on EBay and thought that I had the extra money to go for it. Second, I found the nice seller to be easy to deal with. Russ of The House Of Animation is the kind of dealer who is more collector than seller. He was helpful in offering scans of several additional Chernabog pieces, and totally put no pressure on the sale. Third, I love the pose and the expression of Chernabog in this drawing. We always think of Chernabog as fearsome, commanding the terrors of the night, but we forget that he cowers and succumbs to the rising sun. This pose is amazing as it captures Chernabog's arrogance and the cowardise at once. While I'd always thought that I would one day zero in on a bad ass Chernabog, wings spread to the max, wreaking havoc on the night, I now find myself even happier with the unsure Chernabog. Supreme confidence and inert weakness together in one person are interesting character traits in life and in fiction. Fourth, I always favor animation drawings with colored pencils and this drawing stands out with red, blue and black line work as well as some black pencil shading in the mountain. The colors add a nice punch to these Disney animation drawings. My expertise of recognizing and identifying Disney animators is limited to my reading a few Disney animation books and paying a bit of attention to the field. But I did get feedback on this drawing and will list it as the work of Bill Tytla.
