Marcel Dzama - Will Work for Food (1998)

This drawing was part of a group that Canadian artist Marcel Dzama offered in the fall of 2008 to the Guggenheim Museum, where I sat on their acquisition committee run by under-40 collectors. While we elected to acquire several of the drawings for the Guggenheim's collection (Dzama is also owned by the Tate and the MoMA), somehow my favorite, Will Work For Food, didn't end up in the final sub-group and I was ecstatic to be able to purchase it at the 2009 Armory Show in NYC from the David Zwirner Gallery.

As you can see, Dzama counts comic book art among his influences (I spoke with him in 2008 and he told me that he counted Kirby and Ditko among his favorites). Enjoy!
