Description

Here's the latest entry in my Dead Universes series. It features two more heroes from the short-lived Atlas/Seaboard line of the 1970s: The Protector and the Cougar.

The Protector originally started out going by the name "the Phoenix,' and you can see that flaming bird head symbol he sports as his insignia. And yes, he had it years before Jean Grey decided to take it as her own. Why he changed his name to the Protector, I have no idea. All I remember about him was that he was from sometime in the future. Then he came to the present -- or something.

Okay, and then we have the Cougar. Decades before the term came to mean older women who hook up with younger guys, the Cougar was the name of a stuntman who dabbled in superhero work. Sort of like a cross between Daredevil and the Fall Guy. No wonder it only lasted two issues.

I wouldn't write off the Atlas/Seaboard heroes though. DC is buying up defunct comic lines left and right. They recently obtained publishing rights to the Milestone characters, the THUNDER Agents, the Red Circle characters, Doc Savage, the Spirit, and of course they purchased the Charlton, Fawcett, and Quality lines long ago. I think its only a matter of time you'll see these guys as part of the DC Universe (to be killed off and replaced with newer versions, but that's a discussion for another time and place. RIP Ted Kord and Rip Jagger).

This piece was penciled by the immensely talented Steve Erwin. Steve may be best known for his lengthy run on DC's DEATHSTROKE and CHECKMATE titles. You can check out more of his art and contact him through his Comicspace page here:

I bet they'd still be living universes, had they been drawn this well back in the day. Excelsior!

Really enjoy this piece. Protector could be the offspring of Jean Grey and Black Bolt and Cougar could be subtitled, the Adventures of Sabretooth when he was a boy.

"Remember, old comic lines never die, they just come back as part of the DCU." - that's funny
