PAUL CALLE Huntley and Brinkley

A wonderful Paul Calle graphite illustration for the Huntley and Brinkley News Show ad on NBC. The excellence of this artwork was recognized in the Society of Illustrators' Annual 11- besides being a beautiful example of Calle's artwork, it was also an award-winning piece!

Calle was an American artist and illustrator who was best known for his distinct pencil drawing technique and postage stamps, including 40 that were released by the United States Postal Service, and others for stamps issued by the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Sweden and the United Nations. As the exclusive artist hired by NASA to cover the Apollo 11 astronauts, Calle designed the 10-cent stamp that commemorated the first manned moon landing. The stamp depicted an astronaut stepping onto the moon from the lunar module with the Earth visible over the moon's horizon.

After an extensive illustration career, Calle later transitioned into fine arts. He produced Western-themed artworks that have been shown at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, as well as a 1981 stamp honoring Frederic Remington. His depictions of the American West have been included in the collections of the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma and at the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia.

Calle also wrote and illustrated "The Pencil", one of my favorite books from my art school days.
