Prelim for The Tempest

Last year, I asked Frank Brunner if he would be interested in doing a commission of the father-daughter tandem of Zatara and Zatanna cast in the roles of Prospero and Miranda from "The Tempest." He liked the idea and said he would add me to his list.

The scene we agreed upon was Act I, Scene II where the sorcerer, Prospero, having had his magical servant, Ariel, create a storm that shipwrecks all those who betrayed him in his former life as the Duke of Milan, begins to tell his daughter, Miranda, the secret of their origin and how they came to be on this deserted and enchanted isle. I sent him a bit of reference materials, etches, prints and videos of the play, but Mr. Brunner already seemed to have a pretty good grasp of the imagery involved and, today, sent me his prelim.

He decided to set the scene at night with the last vestige waves of the tempest crashing against a rocky shore, and to illuminate it with Prospero's magic staff. I asked for no changes and now await, ever patiently, to see the finished product, which will be in ink.
