Bjorn Landstrom, Kalevala illustration, 1985

Bjorn Landstrom (1917-2002) was a Finnish illustrator, designer and author who also spent part of his career in Sweden. An avid sailor, Landstrom is best known for his sea-related illustrated books. His book The Ship: An Illustrated History (1961), the telling of maritime history from prehistoric sailboats to nuclear submarines, has been published in 13 languages.
Landstrom also did hundreds of book covers, best known among them in Finland the most famous cover for Mika Waltari's historical novel Sinuhe (1945, published in English in 1949 as "The Egyptian", when it was the bestselling novel of the year in the U.S.).
Here's a painting Landstrom did for the 1985 illustrated edition of the Finnish national epic, The Kalevala. This illustration depicts the ill-fated Kullervo, the most tragic of Kalevala characters who has over the years inspired many Finnish artists, playwrights and composers, best known among them a famous painting by Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1899) and an epic choral symphony by Jean Sibelius (1891).
