Bjorn Landstrom, painting, 1987

Bjorn Landstrom (1917-2002) was a Finnish illustrator, designer and author who also spent part of his career in Sweden. An avid sailor, Landstrom is best known for his sea-related illustrated books. His book The Ship: An Illustrated History (1961), the telling of maritime history from prehistoric sailboats to nuclear submarines, has been published in 13 languages. Landstrom also did hundreds of book covers, best known among them in Finland the most famous cover for Mika Waltari's historical novel Sinuhe (1945, published in English in 1949 as "The Egyptian", when it was the bestselling novel of the year in the U.S.).

I have no idea what this piece is. I think Landstrom's last major illustration work was the Kalevala in 1985 and this is dated two years after that. It could either be an illustration for something, or a free piece of art. Nevertheless, the style and colors are very representative of Landstrom's illustration work.
