Description
The Anatomy Lesson was Alan Moore's real breakout story on Swamp Thing. I've always loved the way this issue combines horror and science, with the perfect chilling realization as its conclusion. Unlike most retcons, this one comes with actual science to back it up.

This page is one of my favorites from the issue - as Woodrue begins to dissect Swamp Thing. I love the slow zooming out of the panels on the page, to show the full scope of the operating theatre. There's some classic Bissette/Totleben linework on Woodue's face. Moore's wording really sets this apart as well. "I wonder if he's pounding yet? Pounding on the glass, his fists like withered little apples..."

Perfect synthesis of scripting and visuals. Moore and Bissette/Totleben at their best. True Grail.

"The Anatomy Lesson" was a feast of words and visuals and, when I read it the first time, it really did feel like something new and amazing.
