Description

Prismacolor pencils on brown Canson pastel paper, 10"x13".
Jackson's characterization of Aragorn was a big problem for me, the notions that he became Strider the ranger to avoid his destiny as king, and that he felt any guilt or inadequacy because of his ancestor Isildur's succumbing to the lure of the Ring. Basically Jackson took a Christ figure--Aragorn as the prophesied healer-king, humble in his person, but in no way conflicted about his identity or his mission in life--and interpreted him as a very conflicted James Dean/Clint Eastwood anti-hero type, presumably to make him comprehensible to a modern, secular audience.
Given all that, Viggo's acting was very good, though I liked him better as Lucifer in THE PROPHECY.
