Description

Early in the 21st century, my wife and I hired a Canadian builder/architect (when I knew him) living in Japan to build our house. Claiming he knew an excellent framer, he offered to get some of my artwork framed, for which I reimbursed him in full, so that it would be ready to hang on the walls when the house was finished. He returned most of them, but, at that time, he said he was unable to return/bring three of the pieces I had entrusted with him.

I lost pics of all three pieces when an old computer went out and I had not properly backed it up — lesson learned, but they were an Infantino/Nyberg Batman Sunday which was part of the Riddler storyline (I'm not sure of the date and I can't find it online but it showed Robin and Alfred looking for a missing Batman and there was a panel, probably the last panel cliffhanger, where they see Riddler standing over an unconscious Batman), a Sandman sketch/spread done with Japananese ink & brush (with some color highlights) that featured the figures of Morpheus and his Raven drawn on two separate sheets of sketch paper (I don’t remember the size) by Yoshitaka Amano and a "Crisis Times Five" splash page from Morrison's JLA 30 (p. 22, I believe) by Porter & Dell (the pic above is a photo of the page from one of the trade paperbacks).

After he moved to Bali, he tried to claim that I had not paid him for what we contracted him to do (untrue and a very strange move on my part since he had been late finishing the house because of some unforeseen problems and I waived the penalties because I did not want him to lose money on the deal). He then broke his contract and left us to deal with the house's many problems, including a rather large and expensive redo of our bathroom which he screwed up badly. The lawyer said we could do nothing as he was out of the country.

I don’t know his full history since then, but a few years later, needing some money, he returned briefly to Japan, reached out to me and said he would rectify my grievances, including returning the art (he had previously claimed to have lost them all in the mail but admitted during a meeting that he had lied and still retained the art), but then he disappeared again without honoring his promise (surprise, right?) and I never heard from him again. The last I heard from a friend, he was said to have divorced his Japanese wife and she is probably living in Japan with their kids now and he was off and away probably never to bee seen again.

If you see the JLA page above or suspect you have seen one of the others I described, please let me know. Thanks.
