Description

Indie-comic hit True Story, Swear To God made the move to Image Comics, but it never really took off, I guess. It's a shame, because I think it was one of the best comics of the 2000s. The humor and everyday drama was compelling, mainly because all of it was so damn honest and genuine. I was a huge fan and am pleased to call writer/artist Tom Beland a friend.

I caught up with him at the San Diego con in 2003 as well, and he rendered this amazing double-figure sketch with the two central characters of the auto-bio comic: Tom and Lily. He roughed it out in blue pencil (still visible in the sketch) and cemented it in marker.

It sums up True Story perfectly. The love between this couple is evident, as is the humor of the book and Tom's fish-out-of-water status as an outsider adjusting to life in Puerto Rico.
