When preparing for Comic-Con International San Diego in 2000, I decided to buy a sketchbook to seek some doodles and such from the vast array to talent to be gathered there. I also decided to give the sketchbook a theme -- "Ouch, that's gotta hurt!" -- figuring artists would appreciate a bit of challenge while also opening them up to do anything they wanted within the theme. And I also made it clear the theme was just a suggestion, that they could put anything they wanted on a page in the small, bound sketchbook. Most embraced the theme, and as I added more sketches to the book, several artists would thumb through it to see what their colleagues and friends did before them. That made for some trying to outdo others, and it led to some great sketches.
