For a long time, I wasn’t sure a Hal Foster Prince Valiant would end up in my collection. After plenty of swings and misses, I’m thrilled to add this example from November 15, 1959. What’s not to like? Val catching holy hell from Aleta, King Arthur, a discussion of the Grail Quest and plenty of knights amidst Foster’s typically beautiful composition– I was sold.

I’m going to fight the impulse to go deep into Foster and the Prince Valiant strip – we all know about him & his creation. But, needless to say, Foster was a major influence on many other iconic and influential artists to come. Why? His high level of draftsmanship, attention to detail and multi-decade consistency in telling engaging and exciting stories would set an incredibly high standard of professionalism for those that followed. Incredibly, before Prince Valiant, Foster had already made a name for himself in adapting Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Tarzan. But, he grew tired of adapting someone else’s work and decided to create his own signature strip. Thank goodness for that!

Fantastic Sunday. Each panel stands on its own as a piece of art with great composition. Foster, although often imitated, no one could draw like he could.

I recently have gone back and started reading Val from the beginning (as I write this, I am up to 1962) and this was a really fine sequence. This one came from the Sunday after my birth so I read it (and the 11/8) very closely just because it had a particular interest being so close to my birthday. The fourth panel with Aleta whispering "coward" as Val leaves their room is particularly nice, but as others have noted, the whole page is wonderful.

Ah, the year I was born.  I'm only about two months older than this.  I just wish I looked half as good as this piece does more than 60 years later.
