DescriptionMy all-time favorite Spidey stories have always been the 3-part anti-drug storyline (ASM #96-98) and the Death of Gwen Stacy storyline (ASM #121-122), both of which I first read when they were reprinted in Marvel Tales #191-192 in 1986. ASM #98 is my second-favorite individual Spidey issue (after ASM #121) - not only does Spidey have an epic battle with his arch-nemesis, the Green Goblin, but, his alter-ego, Peter Parker, also sticks it to the drug dealers, and Gwen Stacy finally returns from London at the end in one of the most satisfying conclusions ever to a Marvel comic. It's the kind of story that sticks with you for life - pure, unadulterated Marvel Magic! And, oh, that gripping, grab-you-by-the-throat cover scene with the sublime composition and perspective - how could anyone NOT want to read the story after seeing it? Anyway, I made a determined attempt to acquire the ASM #98 cover art at auction in 2015, but, narrowly missed out on it then. I thought my opportunity to ever own the artwork had passed, but, a series of fortunate events occurred over the weekend at SDCC 2017, and I was able to acquire it as part of a larger 4-way transaction. I ended up parting with my last (beloved) Romita cover in order to make it happen, but, I am so thrilled to add one of my all-time favorite Spidey covers to my collection in its place! My young hands bought this great comic off the stands back in the day and it remains to me one of the most memorable cover ever... it's exciting, so well laid out and dynamic; Kane is surely one of the great Spider-Man artists of all time. This was certainly a great period for Marvel and Spider-Man. I am in awe of your newest acquisition!!

So yes, I do believe Kane is underrated, and I have come to appreciate this cover even more, especially after seeing it in person. All the back-and-forth about GL #76 is for another discussion:P Regardless, in the end, this has landed in the right collection. So congrats again!

The best cover of that three issue arc--I prefer Gil's dynamic Spidey-in-jeopardy over the all-Romita battle on #97--and one of Kane's best ever. Love how Spidey's finger-scrapes claw over the corner box. So great--congrats on a true show-stopper.

My eyes grew wide when I saw the thumbnail for this cover pop up on my computer. I started reading Spider-Man toward the end of the Romita era, but it was the Kane era that really excited me. The covers he did during this part of his run were often the best on the stands and this one is no exception. Cheers!

Amazing Cover from a great run. I'm curious if there are any pencil marks or even impressions where the missing spider would have been on Spider-Man's costume? It always bothered me that this spider was missing.

As a title Amazing Spider-Man may have more of the most classic, iconic, and truly great covers than any other title. This ranks high on the list.

After 70+ comments, there really isn't much else to say ..... Gil Kane was perhaps one of the greatest cover designers in any era. When you see this cover, you just can't wait to read the issue to find out how the battle unfolds. To top it off, it's Spidey vs. the Green Goblin. A 4 way trade meant 3 other persons passed on this cover. It's hard to imagine 3 other pieces of artwork that could possibly be better than this. It's crystal clear to me who got the better of the trades. Cheers! N.

Definetly my favorite from the show tonight and totally an exciting piece for me to see. I love seeing pieces that I worked at hard at collecting the comic book. I was late into comics as didn't have lots of interest in them as a kid. Not sure if a cost thing or what it was. A friend got me into them as well as MCU about 10 years back. However, one night I was watching the PBS documentary with Stan Lee, Steranko, etc. They hit on many of the important moments in comics and ASM 96 just stuck in my head as the most important moment for me for some reason. Then it took a few years before I picked up all the drug issues as was selective on the price I was willing to pay. This one was the final piece to that mini book collection for me. Great to see the original art and again thanks for sharing.

I'm so glad this cycled up to the front page. This is beautiful. I still remember buying my first of the 3 anti-drug books and being confused about why there was no Comic Code stamp on the cover. When I found out why, I was so proud of Marvel Comics I could just burst. The message was too important not to get it out there. Congratulations on owning this classic cover!

I have a recreation of this framed on my wall and just love Gil Kane. He's the best in my book.
