Description

Noel Sickles drew comic strips for only three years, but had amazing impact on the medium. He adapted visual storytelling techniques from motion pictures and utilized a more impressionistic style in representing people, scenery and action in his art. He brought attitude to the depiction of his characters. You must be pretty special to influence one of the greatest strip artists of all time - Milton Caniff - who was his studio mate. Caniff would adopt a similar style in creating Terry & the Pirates.

In this beautifully detailed and striking example (IMHO) from May 19, 1936, a despondent Mickey tries to figure out a way to escape her confinement while confined in the women’s quarters of Elkerak and attended to by a native woman.

Love the floor plan.  Love the portraits.  Love the intimacy and moment-by-moment narration.  Another great addition, Chris!

Great pick-up Chris! Yes you can really see Sickles style in Caniff's Terry and the Pirates...it's a shame Sickles didn't stick around a little while longer.

I remember holding this in my hands at a SDCC back in ca 2001. The cache of Noel Sickles Scorchy dailies saved by Bert Christman had just turned up, and I got a first stab at the stack that All Star Auctions had brought to the con. I really, really wanted this one, but had to settle with a cheaper daily.
Happy to see it again! Take good care of it! :)

Sickles Strips are a classic for a reason. They influenced so many comic creators and his use of tone is masterful. That said this is definitely one of his better strips. Good pacing and camera angles for dialogue. Great example.
