Description

This might be the ultimate grail for me. The Hobbit graphic novel was my gateway into comics back in 1989 as a kid. I used to spend hours reading the book and looking over David Wenzel's magnificent painted images. I always wanted a significant page from the book, but Wenzel had sold most of the pages years ago.

My luck changed a few weeks ago when I found out the owner of the page where Bard kills Smaug was selling the page. After some friendly negotiations, we settled on a price and he shipped the page to me from his home in Hungary.

The board size for the art is 14" x 21", the art itself is 12" x 18". Even after 30 years, the colors have not faded on the art. Thank you to Kristof for parting with the page. I think the 9 year old me would have been thrilled to know that I would someday own this page.

"Arrow!" said the bowman. "Black arrow! I have saved you to the last. You have never failed me and always I have recovered you. I had you from my father and he from of old. If ever you came from the forges of the true king under the Mountain, go now and speed well!"

I'm a huge fan of the Rankin Bass movies, but I never knew this was a thing! Great piece!

Thank you, Rob!  I love the Rankin Bass movies as well.  You should check out David T. Wenzel's website.  He has done many wonderful Hobbit pieces.

Beautiful page- congrats!! Reading your caption really resonated with me. This book was my big introduction to Tolkien's world and comics as well. I agree it's incredibly surreal to own a piece from this book. Of all the Tolkien pieces in my collection my pieces from Wenzel's "Hobbit" have the most sentimental value.

Congrats again on the epic piece!

Thank you, Ryan, for the kind words!  As it was for you, this graphic novel was my introduction to the amazing world of Tolkien.  David's beautiful art captured my imagination and made me interested in the world of Lord of the Rings.  For that, I am very thankful to David Wenzel.
