Description
I watched the Fox Kids X-Men cartoon as a kid and it was a huge part of my childhood and my brother's. When I got hired to do a cover recreation of this iconic moment from the Phoenix Saga, initially I was met with hesitation. I knew where to find the image and could trace and then ink and render, but I wanted to go a step further to flesh out John Byrne's image. I decided to make the environment more interactive with our heroes, especially with Cyclops. They are on the moon, the lighting is dimmed, so Cyclops's optic blast is the only available source of light. To that end, I employed red-violet tones on his costume and his face, and extended that to the wall he's leaning against. I don't know why the original colorist didn't think of this himself in the 80s. As for the debris Jean is hurtling forward, I changed the color to cool gray tones because the ruins they are in share the same properties. I left some of the original background color in so it's not a complete departure. The cover I used for this recreation is the recent Uncanny X-Men #1 sketch cover variant. Byrne was one of my inspriations during my development as an artist and I grew up on his Superman reboot and Spider-Man (attempted) retcon. Thankfully, I was successful in that I not only duplicated the composition but threw in a few touches of my own that complimented the image.
