DescriptionFollowing up on the cover to Superboy #46 I posted yesterday, today I'm posting the actual cover to Superboy #46 that Grummett first drew. Here you can see that Tom's intent all along was to try to do something different within the strict confines of the "Show the main character's head only" editorial edict that was foisted upon all artistic teams working on mainstream superhero books at DC for the covers dated December 1997. Grummett figured a badly beat up Superboy head would be more interesting than a typical straight on head shot, but apparently the editors didn't agree and they rejected it outright. I can only assume they wanted their hero looking heroic and not like the villain just beat Superboy into a bloody pulp.Grummett drew a 2nd cover, which is the one I posted yesterday, and as you can see on that one, he still wanted to do something other than a straight ahead shot, so he drew Superboy with a huge smile on his face and hanging upside down! Kudos to Hazlewood on the fine inking job, and I also have to give Kudos to the editor for at least understanding what Grummett was trying to accomplish and therefore also for publishing the final cover with Superboy upside down, when they very easily could've flipped the cover 180 degrees and published it upside up to fit with the rest of the covers they did that month. I love seeing rejected covers, as they provide a glimpse into the creative process and editorial decisions that go into creating the comic books we all love so much. Social/Sharing |

Hahaha, that one does make me chuckle. Mainly because I still have that grinning, unscathed image of Superboy's still in my head from your last post. This cover seems very much like the "after" pic to the other one's "before." Or maybe what Superboy would look like when he first rolls out of bed in the morning after a very rough night of carousing. Either way, thank you for sharing those two covers, because it really does give a fun look into the creative process.

Glad to see you reunited these two. I briefly considered trying when I still owned this one, but as so often happens, I found something else I wanted.
