Description
As Nick Katradis put up the inked version of this page a year back, I thought I’d put up the pencils. I have no idea why Bob Wiacek decided to lightbox ink that issue, but it means we get a good chance to see what Jim Mooney’s (blue) pencils were like on the opening page – and they are truly impressive! Wiacek moved the moon from the right to the left, presumably to make space for the text boxes. Gentleman Jim has added a wood balloon and inscribed a ‘get well soon’ message after the page was returned to him, giving it away to someone else. Mooney really conveys the slow, lumbering nature of the muck monster. What an opening page this was – sure to draw the reader into the story to come!

Striking figure that lurks in the bog at night.  Mooney makes him one with his element and sets the mood instantly with this page one!

One of the best images of Man-Thing I've seen, and what an opening page!  So cool to see Jim Mooney's penciling process.  I've heard of people 'moving heaven and earth' to accomplish something.  Here, Jim moved the moon!

A fantastic mix of both graphite and blue pencil. So wonderful to see art from this era survive in its pencilled form!

That snake might not like Man-Thing, but I do. Look at all that wonderful detail, like the old man's beard hanging from the vines, or his slime splashing into the water. Mooney rendered this scene perfectly. One of the Marvel Bullpen's best, imo. Great pick-up. Congrats!

Mooney is so good and doesn't get enough credit for being so.

A fantastic pice of history and far superior to the published artwork. If I'm being honest the second series didn't grab me anything lke as much as the first, but the pencils here show that Jim was still absolutely at the peak of his powers. If only he'd inked it as well!
