DescriptionContinuing with historic Pulp cover art, these are two prelims to the cover of the Fall 1944 issue of the classic... "The Rio Kid Western", by the legendary George Rozen. (known to many as THE The Shadow artist!)The first is the tight pencil prelim that measures 7.5 X 10. The next is a super rare color painting test measuring 5.25 X 6.5 These are just SO nice and smooth in person, especially appreciated after nearly eight decades. I hope you enjoy them! Very cool! The prelim looks so fragile. The color test looks so much brighter than the published example. Do you think they printed the same bright colors and the copy is just faded with age? Or did they have more muted colors in the final painting for publication?

The pencil prelim is on the fragile side. It's on vellum. Back them these were not made to be preserved at all. No collecibility was forseen. It's remarkable that we still have the examples that we do.
As for the colors on the painted piece. Yes they're much more dynamic on the test art. And while age related fading may play a part, I think it's predominently the more muted colors they chose for the publised cover. I think they went for more realism there.
