Description
Embarrassing as it is to admit, I did not appreciate King Kirby in my youth. It was only after hearing artists I did admire (e.g., Frank Miller, Erik Larsen, etc.) remark on how singularly important Kirby was that I began to see the light, but it really hit me when I discovered Bruce Timm in the 90s. He didn't tell me, he showed me in a user-friendly way with his "simple" and gorgeous interpretations of Kirby characters and visual style why I should genuflect with every other comic fan at the alter of Kirby.

Anyhow, I have long pined for a great example of Timm's interpretation of Hulk bounding towards the viewer, and this recently popped up for sale. I think this is from the 90s and I just love the pose, expression, and all the blueline limbs Timm tried out before settling on the final version. I'm fascinated by Timm's process.

As it turns out, lurking on my hard disk was an old scan I found someplace from 2005 of what is clearly an edited version of this drawing, but I don't know if it ever saw print. If you know if/where this was published please drop me a line.

Thanks to T Shen for a smooth transaction and great packing job!

Thanks for taking a look!

There's a lot more rendering going on here than I'm used to seeing from Bruce.  Almost looks as if he couldn't stop adding to the piece.  Sometimes that's a sign of an artist being unhappy with the image.  But here it looks like he was just having too much fun.  Also good to know that I'm not the only late bloomer when it comes to Kirby.  Hopefully you enjoyed and appreciated your lightbulb moment as much as I did.  For me, it was the best art ephiphany ever!

Timm doing Kirby is always so much fun. He does a good job channeling Kirby but also adds his own flavor as well. Really nice Hulk image! Huge congrats!

Great piece! I love when artists use blues for penciling and you can see their process of finding the right lines. It's more like an experiment in sculpture than what you naturally think of as drawing a figure. That thought kind of blew my mind when i first realized that the better way to find the right line was to just let your freak flag fly a little. Seeing it in blues like this always makes me appreciate that road. I love this Hulk. It's super cool man. I really like Timm's comic subject stuff. His pretty girls are nice, but his comic stuff is where it's at for me.

Timm "got" Kirby on a cellular level. The beautiful homage style has always struck me. It's so Kirby, but so Timm. A gorgeous Hulk. Congrats on getting it! ;)

Happy this is in an awesome gallery! I too must admit I didn't come to appreciate Kirby or Timm's art until several years ago as well so will share in that shame.

A lovely, Kirbyesque piece, capturing the King's creation with great observation while adding his own style. The pose is perfect and the feet are superb.

Superb feet, indeed!  I notice that some Timm Hulk pieces have 5 toes per foot whereas others have only 4, but his design and poses are always spot on, IMO.  Thanks for your comment!

He's really drawing with the brushpen, not just tracing. Great wide Frankenstein Kirby Hulk head with a classic pose!
