DescriptionA delicious page from Matt Wagner's Mage: The Hero Discovered #1, page 9.The grey-line consists of an acetate overlay of the pencil and ink page and a separate board containing a grey-line reproduction of the original page; Matt Wagner hand-colored the grey-line himself using watercolors and airbrush, the two techniques he used in this book, and has signed the piece. The original grey-line is done on a board that measures approx. 8" x 11 /12" with an image area that is approx. that of the published comic book. Thanks very much to Jim Warden at DOA Original Comic Art for making this available on Comic Art LIVE! I've included an additional pic of the hand-colored artwork as well to show off the detailed work. As I examined the paint, it looks like Matt used a different, bolder colored paint for these earlier issues (#1 and #3). Update: Turns out in the CAF interview Matt mentioned it was different paper. This is the original color artwork for Chapter 1 of the Mage graphic novel published by Donning (see where it says "Donning"). Matt Wagner recolored issue #1 of Mage for the Donning/Starblaze edition. The Mage #1 comic book has different (more muted) colors. I think this is the better version, as it has the distinctive airbrush look that the series became known for.
