Description

Mark Schultz’s work is pretty unique for a modern comic book artist. His style is more reminiscent of the artists from the 1930's and 1940's, the golden era of comic strips. His work reminds me of artists like Hal Foster (Tarzan, Prince Valiant), Alex Raymond (Flash Gordon), and Burne Hogarth (Tarzan). There's even a touch of the EC artists of the 1950's, like Wally Wood and Al Williamson. To me, Mark's superb work on Xenozoic Tales--aka Cadillacs and Dinosaurs--is both new and old at the same time. This illustration, published on the cover of Comic Book Creator #15, captures that duality perfectly. It’s a outstanding image of Jack Tenrec and Hannah Dundee, rifles in hand, surrounded by dinosaurs. The scene is beautifully composed, with a silhouetted dinosaur in the foreground framing the bottom of the piece and two towering T-Rexes at the top. In the center of the drawing, Jack and Hannah are inked in Mark's trademark dry brush technique which gives both their hair and clothing a rumpled, almost sketchy appearance. The dry brush technique also gives the dinosaurs real heft, and adds a feathery look to their frills. On the foliage, it makes the tall grasses and trees seem more lifelike. IMHO, this illustration is a masterpiece, pencilled and inked by an artist who carries on a tradition of outstanding draftsmanship coupled with exquisite rendering. And happily, it's all done on paper in old fashioned brush and ink. I'm thrilled to add this exquisite piece to my collection.

The expressions of terror are superb. The use of white space draws the eye quickly to the dinosaurs at the top, and the one is shadow is seen after the horrified faces. Very nicely executed.

Mark Schultz's artwork is a thrilling mix of adventure and imagination. The way he brings characters to life alongside these massive dinosaurs is nothing short of awesome. The detailed line work and bold shading really make everything pop, pulling you right into this wild, prehistoric scene. This piece not only highlights Schultz's incredible skills but also taps into those classic adventure vibes we all love. Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Mark Schultz is one of my white whales. This amazing rendering of Jack and Hannah shows all of his magnificent skills and copious talent. The inking alone on this piece would make it a worthy pick up. Congratulations!

Mark Shultz, an artist I didn't know but I admit that his drawing and inking style is really intriguing, even if it is modern it looks a lot to the past, the landscape and the surrounding figures are rich and accurate like the main image, I must admit that I am very impressed by this artist, fantastic Cover Billy

Calvin(clearly your real name judging by your avatar), I looked and looked but cannot find Hobbes or his prehistoric variant. You should ask Mark Shultz to use some of the white space currently unfilled. Perhaps jumping in ambush onto the dinosaurs noggins in a comic strip appropriate manner. I am sure he would be delighted to facilitate this and change the hero face into a likeness of you. I reckon you can also get him to change Hannah into Calvin's mom. She would be rocking that outfit.

Mark's composition and rendering are nonpareil, and the drama and dynamics on this piece are just beyond great. We may not walk the earth with dinosaurs, but sharing the Mark Schultz era is pretty damn cool.
