DescriptionPublished 1958 by Erich Pabel Verlag GmbH & Co in Germany.Saturn-Kommando by King Lang which is a translation of Saturn Patrol which was originally published by Curtis-Warren in 1951. Cover is signed by H. Albrecht which is a pseudonym of Karl Stephan. Karl was a German artist who started his art career in 1952 by drawing signs and cinema posters. He then moved on to doing covers for several publishing houses. He passed away in 1980 at the age of 57. He had had training in aviation construction and was a flight instructor and was able to incorporate his aviation knowledge into his paintings. He was one of three illustrators (along with Johnny Bruck and Rudolf Sieber-Lonati) who left their mark on German Science Fiction in the 50's and 60's. King Lang was a house name used by Curtis-Warren and the actual author of this book was E.C. Tubb. Tubb was Britain’s most prolific science fiction writer. Best known for his epic Dumarest Saga series, which ultimately ran to 33 volumes. Saturn Patrol was his first novel. Within three years, he has written 29 more pulp novels. He was a five-time winner of the Nebula Science Fiction Magazine Literary Award (1953-1958) and received the 1955 Cytricon Literary Award for Best British SF Writer. His Dumarest of Terra saga was one of my favorite SF series and I have two covers for that series: The Jester at Scar and World of Promise. Social/Sharing |

Same paints but it feels just a little bit bigger now
Our same Saturn Kommando but it don't sound the same
When our friends talk about you, Albrecht when said just hear Stephan
'Cause my art breaks a little when I hear that name
It all just sounds like ooh, ooh, ooh, hoo
Mm, too young, too dumb to realize
That I should have bought all covers
And held Albrecht
Should have saved Utopia
When I had King Lang
Take you for EC Tubb see all Curtis Warren would do was dance
Now Karl Stephan's drawing
But he's painting as another name

Fantastic sci fi cover by Karl Stephan. Love the posterized style he used here. It reminds me a bit of travel posters from the '30s, only this travel poster is for a space station...and it's under attack! I've always had a soft spot for science fiction illustration and this one is terrific!

It's always fun to see vintage 1950's Science Fiction art, and as usual, I appreciate the scholarship that you've included!
