Description

What's worse: The uninvited guests you know about, or the one you don't? Ernesto Guerrero answers a knock at the door, unaware that yet another man is staking out his house. Something tells me that little Diego shouldn't be going out to play.

“Mr. Ernesto Guerrero?”

“That’s me. With whom do I have the pleasure of...?”

“Will you let us in? For certain reasons, the road is not an ideal place to be.”

(The assassin Erwin Rogers watches from his car and thinks to himself.) “I was waiting for him to go out for his afternoon walk. They beat me to it. One is Detective Baldwyn, and I'd swear the other is the vampire hunter... A golden opportunity!”

“Mama, can I go out and play in the street?”

“Yes, okay, Diego. But stay on the sidewalk, and don't go too far!”

“You say I am in danger?”

“In mortal danger, Mr. Guerrero. Only we can offer you protection.”

(Erwin Rogers is holding Diego's ball.) “Will you give me the ball back, sir?’

“Right away. What's your name, kid?”

“Francisca! Where’s Diego?”

“He went out to play.”

“Call him back in! Quick!”

“So you won't come play with me?”

“Not without my father's permission, sir. But do you know my father?’

“Of course! And if you come with me, he'll come looking for us later. As if we were playing hide and seek, you understand?”

“Diego! Diego!”

“That's my Mom calling...”

The 'Diego's eye' view of looming Erwin emphasizes the power differential between the two, enhancing the menace.

Nice piece of detective work when you can't even spot the bad guy on a stake out across the street. Go Diego Go!

Agreed - the lower angle showing Erwin looming from above is very effective. Nice storytelling.

That close up panel 4 of Erwin Rogers smoking has such a great noir look to it, and the facial expressions on Diego and his mom on pg. 68 are really nice!
