DescriptionIn a moment of extreme irony, Prince Rudolf has a vision of the birth of his son Adolf, and the untold suffering that boy will cause as a man. “Aaahhh!” “One last push… Here he is, he's a handsome boy.” “Waaahhh!” “Is he... is he okay?” “Of course, Klara. He's very healthy.” “My little one...” “Waaaah!” “What will you call him?” “Adolf. My husband chose it.” “Adolf Hitler. That sounds good... That’s a nice name.” “Nooooo!” Perhaps her husband chose that name because of its similarities to “Rudolf,” the biological father? If so, it was intended as an ongoing rebuke to his wife for her infidelity. This Italian story set in the German-speaking world gives us the opportunity to consider the competing narratives about the Holocaust in those two countries. Germans generally avoided discussing the Holocaust until the late 1960s because of shame over their citizenry's widespread complicity. But a new generation arose that insisted the country confront its past, and today Holocaust education is a massive segment in German schools -- to a degree that some find repetitive, even. Italians, on the other hand, initially tended to see the Holocaust as something that only the Germans did, until scholarship of the 1970s brought evidence of Italian complicity to the attention of new generations prepared to accept it. Roberto Benigni's 1997 film "Life is Beautiful,” which dealt with the Italian Holocaust, won numerous awards at Cannes and the Oscars. Social/Sharing |
