Description

Latest - and last - Golden Age Team-Up Project commission: The Brave & The Bold Special #2, teaming Batman with the All-Star Squadron, adapted by Bambos Georgiou from the Paul Ryan / Bob Layton cover to Squadron Supreme #12.

Spring 1945 - and (as seen in the first B&B Special, Sensation Comics Special #1, and DC Comics Presents Speical #1) a veritable army of Axis super-villains, led by the Dragon King, has defeated and captured the members of the All-Star Squadron, including the Man Of Steel, the Amazing Amazon and the Gotham Guardian! With the heroes held captive, the Dragon King outlines plans to transport them to Berlin where the magically-powered and magically-vulnerable Squadron members will fall under the spell of the Spear Of Destiny and fight for the Axis, while the other heroes will be executed. As he does so, however, Batman uses his escapology skills to free himself from his chains, and hides himself in the shadows...

Several of the villains and their super-strong flunkies begin to carry the captured heroes through a hidden tunnel to a U-Boat docked at the coast, but while they do, Batman takes advantage to begin to free some of his fellow All-Stars, snapping a vial of smelling salts under the noses of Firebrand (who melts her way through her chains) and Amazing Man (who absorbs the properties of his restraints before snapping them). Firebrand then frees Liberty Belle, Amazing Man breaks Johnny Quick loose, and Batman uses an acid capsule from his utility belt to release Hawkman.

As the heroes move to free other captives, however, some of the villains return, and all six hide themselves - but their absence is spotted and, before the alarm can be raised, Batman and his allies attack Sumo, Sea Wolf, and Night and Fog. However, before they can knock out all their opponents, more members of Axis Amerika and their villainous allies arrive, and the heroes find themselves surrounded!

Outnumbered, the heroes throw themselves into battle, with Johnny Quick striking down Zyklon before he can use his super-speed to incapacitate any of the free Squadron members, Batman piling into his evil counterpart the Horned Owl, Liberty Belle decking Doctor Poison before she can use her deadly gas to knock them out again, Amazing Man trading blows with Ubermensch, and Hawkman engaging win an aerial duel with Kamikaze! A flaming barrier raised by Firebrand holds back the other villains for long enough to allow her to melt the restraints on more of the captive All-Star Squadron members, and in short order Sea Wolf is beaten down by the Blue Beetle, Night and Fog are defeated by Phantom Lady and Starman, Usil's arrows are useless against Robotman, and Kung is overcome by Judomaster and Tiger in a martial-arts battle!

Before long, only the Dragon King, Sumo and Gudra remain standing - and the now-freed Superman and Wonder Woman step up to battle alongside Batman! As Gudra prepares to face an assault by the Amazing Amazon, she's blindsided as Wonder Woman aids the Man Of Steel in beating down Sumo, while a three-pronged magical attack by Ibis The Invincible, Zatara and Sargon the Sorceror is sufficient to imprison Gudra! Meanwhile, Batman hurls himself at the Dragon King, and a flurry of punches sends the Japanese mastermind into unconsciousness.

With the villains defeated, Batman snatches the Dragon King's hood away - and is stunned to see the face of Prince Daka (as seen in All-Star Squadron #42-43 and the 1943 Batman serial)! Daka reveals that he had escaped from the alligators which Batman had assumed to have killed him (in the final chapter of the serial) and has been working in secret ever since, disguising himself as the Dragon King for this coordinated attack on America's heroes while the real Dragon King remains in Tokyo, directing the plan,

While surprised, Batman takes comfort from the fact that he and his allies have been victorious, and the defeated villains are taken into captivity, with restraints courtesy of the magical members of the All-Star Squadron ensuring that they will not be able to break free. While the war is not yet over, a major blow has been struck against the Axis forces - and Batman expresses the hope that before too long, freedom will be restored across the world!

... and that's it. After 60 regular B&B issues, plus five Annuals, three DC Comics Presennts stories and four concluding Specials over the course of almost four years, I'm bringing the Golden Age Team-Up Project to an end. Hope everyone has enjoyed it!
