DescriptionI like to get western artists to draw manga, anime and tokusatsu movie/TV characters, but occasionally, I get the chance to commission a Japanese artist. My friend Yoshi presented me with the opportunity to get one from manga artist, Shogo Aoki, whose most recent published work is the Spider-Man manga, "Spider-Man: Shadow Warrior." So, of course, I asked him to draw Leopardon!I have long had a soft spot in my heart for Leopardon, the giant, transforming robot from the bonkers 1978 Japanese live-action TV series "Supaidahman" (AKA: Toei's Spider-Man). Aside from the cool design, Leopardon was the first giant robot to appear in a live-action superhero series, a concept later adopted by the Super Sentai franchise and its American counterpart, Power Rangers. Anyway, Yoshi wasn't sure Aoki-san would draw Leopardon as he doesn't like to draw characters by other Japanese creators, but, when he asked him about it, the answer came back yes. And, holding the results in my hand, I can honestly say that I made a great choice (pat myself on the back). Aoki-san captured the power of Leopardon, covering every inch of the shikishi board this was drawn on with colorful and artistic flourishes not fully captured by my camera. Social/Sharing |

I love all that wear and tear, plus all the splatter effects to simulate the fireworks and sparks when they go into combat! Especially with the live action practical effects.

Very cool looking piece, Finney-san, but what I love even more is the ability to easily pronouce the name of the show's main character by your phoenetic spelling, "Supaidahman"!

Phenomenal commission of Leopardon by Shogo Aoki! I am not familiar with the character but I do love great art--And this is certainly that! Love the tight closeup Shogo used here with all the battle damage apparent on Leopardon's armor. Shogo really infuses this illustration with a lot of depth and drama. Stunning pick-up, congrats!

The image is already looking quite wild, so I can't imagine how crazy the TV show was. Lovely technique in display here, making for a mix of shiney metal and gritty surface effects. Nice!
