Another gorgeous David Wright ‘lovely’, but this one particularly unique for its visual composition. I’ve already mentioned Wright’s uniqueness in presenting fashion, glamour, beauty, and sensuality when depicting women, but he usually does so in softer angles and warmer tones.

This piece seems an intentioned attempt at an opposite approach – the use of sharp angles and black against a bright background. Why? Well, in my humble opinion, Wright is focused on making sure the beautiful face, soft features and piercing eyes of the model he paints are what the viewer’s eye is immediately drawn to when taking in the illustration. And, by contrasting a glowing, colorful series of circular images (her face, cheekbones, arched eyebrows, eyes, nostrils, and lips) with the sharp, black angular structures of her dress and hat (even her fingers are stiff and straight, almost as much as her cigarette), Wright succeeds magnificently.

This piece, entitled ‘H.E.’, was a pin-up included in the September 9, 1942, edition of Sketch Magazine, the British illustrated weekly journal (primarily a society magazine) that ran for almost 3,000 issues from 1893 to 1959.

This piece was also featured on page 41 of Terry Parker’s ‘Sirens: The Pin-Up Art of David Wright’, the definitive examination of David Wright’s commercial illustration and pin-up work.

Wow! Stunning sketch of a supremely confident woman. Love this David Wright drawing--Didn't know he did commercial illustration in addition to comic art. Such and unusual look for 40s fashion with the black dress and black hat, but they do frame her face beautifully. Interesting that she's holding a cigarette--A symbol of the independent woman, I suspect. Killer pick-up, congrats!

Glamor model and big city sophistication! For the wartime period, it represents the coming of the independent woman as many have seen for the first time in the movies. Soft facial features against the sharp edges are used to show beauty and power.
