Description

Kirby had a glorious vision for his return to Black Panther – part science fiction, part myth and mysticism, part heist, and all wrapped up into an action-packed romp. An artefact called King Soloman’s Frog used to be in the possession of T’Challa’s grandfather, a fact which is just sufficient for collector Mister Little to pique our hero’s interest in its recovery. The Frog is really a time machine, leading to the Panther having to fight off enemies from the past and the future just to keep hold of the device, as the pair seek out King Soloman’s Tomb to locate the codes needed to control the time travel accidents. Unfortunately, Princess Zanda also wants to Frog, and on this page her mercenaries attack Mister Little’s helicopter to force a landing. As a ten year-old, I was captivated by the cover, and gripped by the crazy story.

Kirby’s storytelling is as fast-paced as a Hollywood odd-ball farce or a James Bond movie, with the characters not even getting an opportunity to catch their breath before the next attack. Fresh from their Fourth-World stint, Kirby and Royer capture the hectic chase for the Frog, with fluid lines and rapid changes of ‘camera’ angle, to rachet up the peril in each successive panel.

Jack Kirby rocks this!  Grandiose presentation with Royer inks to bring Kirby's regal adventure and imaginative high tech!  It has elements of adventure, spy thriller, sci-fi, and superhero genres!

Kirby and Royer produced some stellar art in the mid '70s . Excellent example from their run on BP.

Jack's Black Panther #1 was a high velocity hairpin turn following Don Mcgregor and Billy Graham's T'Challa run, but Kirby was never one to abide by the continuity of others. Viewed entirely as its own distinct animal, Jack's Panther series was, of course, a lot of fun, and a showcase for his still masterful art and storytelling.
Also, this is a great page, congrats on an excellent example!

I just love the 70s Kirby stuff! He hadn't lost a step at all, and some would call this their favorite period of art as he clearly was doing exactly what he wanted. I love this page - Panter looks amazing! Congratulations!

I love how with Cap and then with the Panther, Jack would just throw you right in the action & story, and there were no handlebars so you were always on the edge--just lookit this page, congrats!

Mike Royer understood.  No being delicate when inking the King's 70s work.  BOLD BABY!  BOLD!

I love the way Kirby draws Panther.  Sometimes, like in panel 4, he almost looks liquid.

Kirby was such a visionary and Royer was icing on the cake. Stunning example.
