Description

This isn't in hand yet because Felix just received it. However, he was kind enough to send a scan to me and even the scan by itself demonstrates how much effort was put into this cover quality commission. Of course one has to have the talent to complete something like this but it is clear to me that Nick took great pride in putting in the best he could for this piece - and then some. I have obtained many great commissions of the Two-Gun Kid before but this may well be the best and I cannot wait to see it in person.

The way he crosses the guns is great old west symbolism of the gunfighters!  The mysticism and romance of the western legends were only furthered by the genre in pop culture through radio, books, TV, and films of the mid 20th century.  The moral lessons learned through the Two-Gun Kid stories endure no matter who, where, or when they were read.

Well said - and the moral lessons are precisely why I am attracted to Westerns in general and the Two-Gun Kid in particular (his mask is also reminscent of the superhero that we know in another context). Everyone loves grey but the point is that while life may often have shades of grey, having the moral wisdom to choose becomes all-important. It is not "anything goes".

I've been seeing many of Derington's commissions recently and so many of them are incredibly attractive and impressive looking. The badass Two-Gun Kid was certainly one of my favourites and obviously made just for you! But as for not being able to wait to see it in person, who knows if that will happen now that you've joined the ranks of collectors who love to jinx themselves by posting art they don't even have in hand yet! Good Luck!

Now that's quite negative. In life, one has to be optimistic and I am confident that I will see it in person in the fullness of time!

Oh, nothing negative just yet. All safe and sound for now. But you never know what may happen when excitement to share leads you to tempt fate! Of course, those who aren't superstitious haven't any reason to worry.

Loving the textures: the tree, the pants, the leather gun belt. So much subtle goodness. Enjoy!

Many thanks, Steve. Yes, the textures of literally everything are so very well done. It's such a striking piece.

This is great!  Derington, like fine wine, just gets better and better.

Many thanks, Ron. I have had many commissions done in the past but I have to say that this is truly fantastic (particularly given the idiosyncratic nature of the subject matter requested).

Mirror mirror on the wall, which caf post has the best texture of them all?  Congrats on a great illustration!

This came out excellent, congrats (and I'm sure posting before you have in hand will work out just fine)! I love the color work from Nick on this piece and how his inking plays off the color pallette. Even the 7 birds in the sky are done with care, and the Two-Gun Kid figure feels so much in direct focus, really top notch work from Derington.

Many thanks, Kavi, for your kindness and acute analysis, as always. In particular, the texture of this piece is truly off the charts - not easy to accomplish especially when it is a color piece.

FAN.  TASTIC.  Holy moley, CAB, Nick definitely outdoes himself here.  I'm not sure if you read his 'Batman Universe' run, but Nick spent a neat little chunk of lovely pages with Jonah Hex, and showed us all that he was no stranger to those parts.  But even if you already knew that Nick could draw a western character and setting exceptionally well, I can't imagine you'd have been prepared for -this- masterpiece.  It's obvious that Nick fully invested himself into this last batch of commissions because they are, all of them, exceptional.  There's substance and style everywhere you look on this thing: the folds of clothing, the subtle touch on the shading under the brim of Two-Gun's hat, the bark of the tree, the blue of the sky, the color of the landscape behind him, The Kid's leather holsters... (even the two guns in Nick's signature bubble :) ), I just can't stop digging into this piece, and it never seems to stop offering up gold.  Sensational.

Fantastic choice of commission, CAB, beautifully executed by the Two-Pen Kid himself (although I don't think he really calls himself that :) ).  GORGEOUS!  Can't wait for you to see this beauty in person!  HUGE congrats!

Many thanks, Jason. And I must confess my ignorance as I had no idea that Nick drew Jonah Hex. Your observations are so detailed as well as perceptive and astute as always and I cannot agree with them more. I trust that all is well with you. I ALWAYS enjoy your comments.

Always loved Kirby's design for the Two-Gun Kid--part cowboy, part super-hero.  This is awesome--wish Marvel would do something cool with these Western heroes!

Many thanks, Jeremy. You are spot-on as to why this character appeals so much to me, given my liking for Westerns to begin with.
