Fate is a funny thing.  But when it comes to collecting comic art, it usually makes for the best stories.  This piece took an interesting path, but all that matters is that it ended up where it was meant to be.  Congrats and enjoy.  Beautiful Kane cover.

Kane's prime time period for designing the most dramatic covers that powered Marvel through the 70's.  The most awesome ones are the ones where the heroes are in peril.  They are the opposite of today's covers that favor pinups over story.

Great cover... also from my own childhood collecting era... and great story! I am delusional enough to believe that certain art belongs in certain collections, and it makes me happy to hear that this art found its way home.  It's true that every time a comic art collector acquires a long sought grail, you hear a bell, and an angel gets his wings!

Its great to see you posting some of the higher end pieces, especially ones that have a great story behind them.

Fantastic cover! Firmly in my earliest comic reading backstock nostalgia era. My first spinner rack Iron Man was issue 116 and I loved going to my LCS (the only one in the area at that time) to have them pull backstock and put on the counter in brown cardboard boxes (before the white long boxes) for my perusing enjoyment. What I remembered most from these older issues was how Iron Man was always in peril on the covers, and more than just peril - his end always looked imminent (how many issues was his armor being destroyed, melted, etc.?). As much as I hated seeing my hero being beaten to the edge of defeat, it really made me want to buy those back issues (good work Marvel editorial, you did your job well). This is one of those covers - so well-remembered. 

PS - leave it to Gil Kane to find a way to work in nostrils on ol shellhead via the short-lived nose mask.

Nice story and a memorable Kane cover! The detailed musculature is great, and the angle and poses chosen really convey Stark's predicament. Great cover!
