Maurice Milliére - Sailing Against the Waves

This is an original painting of a tension-filled sailboat scene and sea landscape created by the French painter, Maurice Milliére (1871-1946). Milliére is best known as helping to establish the popularity of "boudoir pinup" in the early 1900s, being the inspiration for many legendary artists such as Alberto Vargas and Enoch Bolles. A very dramatic piece which shows the dangers of setting sail against turbulent waters, but in the background there is the hint of a silver lining of smoother sailing that awaits past the violent waves. This piece shows the artistic range of Milliére which is a departure from his famed pinups of the fairer sex. Rendered in oils on canvas and measures 18"x26". There is a small area of damage at the bottom right and wear around framed edges but generally in good condition for a painting of this age.
