Description
Had lots going on in recent months and in 2025 in general so haven’t been on CAF much but glad to be back and posting something!

I have a couple non-published DWJ pieces (see Havok commission and a color Optimus Prime in my gallery) but have wanted the one right published piece…target acquired :) Love Beta Ray Bill’s origin story, his look, and of course his name, the latter of which may be the best in comics. And DWJ writing and drawing Bill was a perfect combo. As far as the OA goes, only issues #1 and #4 of the 5-issue mini were not sold complete, and I whiffed on both those initial drops. So I’m glad to add this example from issue #1 this second go around!

Here Bill GRABs a Knull-possessed Fin Fang Foom then a BOOMing flip. Gotta love the sound effect lettering DWJ draws right on the board, along with the speed lines in the second. Final panel was the deal sealer – a battle weary but still determined Bill! DWJ said in his commentary that this was probably his favorite panel from the book.

Checks all boxes – Bill prominently featured, in an action scene, and lotsa that gritty energy. Thanks, HCH, and happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate!

It's always so great to see hand drawn sound effects incorporated into the art, and that closeup of Bill is so gritty and battle worn. Super sweet and kick ass. Welcome back, pal, and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

KG!!!  We all have so much to be greatful for in our lives, and at the very best of times, sharing a beautiful piece of OA with your community really puts a bow in top of it all, right?  In that spirit, this is an absolutely -perfect- add, Kahlil!  Lots to celebrate with a phenomenal DWJ BRB piece, KG, not the least of which is the fact that it is a published example that has a bit of everything you'd want on a DWJ page: those fantastic letters, the fly-off-the-page-action (it's like "Do A Hammerbomb"!), and that monstrously awesome final panel with our hero, roughed up, but just getting started.  DWJ's Beta Ray had an almost gladiatorial appearance (which fit the events of the series so well) and that first panel really shows it off.  Such a GREAT page, Kahlil - so much to be thankful for.  Me? I'm grateful we get another KGearon post on CAF in time for the holidays. :)  Hope all is well there, pal.

Ahhh, you're too kind, man.  I hadn't thought "gladiatorial" when thinking BRB's look and feel here but I 100% agree.  Definitely thankful for the add, as well as for the community and camaraderie this stuff in OA has brought.  And you're part of that, man.

Appreciate the comments, all!

Oh very fun
What will you Havok and Prime
You're only angling for a sketch for a short while
And though your dreams may toss and turn Foom now
They will vanish as page like your DDub best scene
Daniel true fading up BOOM to skies
And though you GRAB him at last Stormbreaker
You know he’s Beta Bill
(You know he’s Beta Bill)
And the scratches make the good buy harder still

Oh very fun
What will you treat us this time
There'll never be a better chance to chase this kind
And if you want this world to see a Beta Ray
Bill you carry the works of love with you
Will you buy the great artwork in with Johnson
And though you want to last for CAFers
You know your Beta Bill
(You know yours better skill)
And the good buy makes the journey harder still

"DDub best scene" just rolls :)

And "There'll never be a better chance to chase this kind"...100% what I thought when making a go for this one, lol.  Thanks, MW!

That's an overall fantastic action page. I love the use of onomatopoeia in the first panel. The second is obviously an insane money shot and in the third, his (horse?) pecs are so big, they break panel border? What's not to love?

DWJ's style might not be for every book but he really belongs on a gritty book like Beta Ray Bill and he can really unleash his unique style like he does on this page. Congrats on a great pick up.

Phenomenal page from the first issue, and with a jaw dropper of a final panel. The Beta Ray Bill mini is still my personal fav of DWJ's mainstream comic book work to date, fantastic addition! Good to see you posting and have a great Thanksgiving bud!

Hope you and the rest o' the CAF crew had a great turkey day, too, Kavi!  And I agree...BRB is also my fave of DWJ's mainstream work.  Him being on both writing and drawing duties...his love for the character definitely shines.  Like the gleaming edge of Stormbreaker's blade side.

Stretched a bit on that last one but hey, the thought was there.

Thanks for the add!

Congrats on (finally) picking up a DWJ published page!  Great example of the frenetic action (and sound effect captions) that he's known for delivering.

Great Ddubb action that ends in a very satisfying tail whip. Then we get that bottom panel. Oh my! Wonderful three panel banger from DWJ!

Fantastic page!  This is THE page to own from the book.  I think DWJ's approach to Beta Ray Bill was inspired.
