Description
Over a year ago, I picked up a lot of three L.E.G.I.O.N. pages from eBay, all done by what I would call "unusual" artists, because none of them were mainstays on the title. This first one is pencilled by Scott Kolins, which is neat, because he would go on to be the main penciller of two separate Legion of Super-Heroes titles, but his work on this fill-in issue of an LSH spinoff series predates them both!

Here we see the team's R.E.C.R.U.I.T.S. (a task force of more inexperienced super-powered members) trying to honour the last wishes of their fellow team member Darius (that's his head Vril Dox is holding). Darius was a cyborg, and his last request before his body was destroyed was that the R.E.C.R.U.I.T.S. reunite him with his creator. No one knows who Darius's creator is, or where Darius even came from, but a brawl with Lobo (who had stolen poor Darius's head with plans to use it as a hood ornament for his motorcycle!) draws the attention of Vril Dox, who examines Darius's wiring and is able to offer some insights.

For a bunch of random characters who were introduced nearly halfway into the series, I always liked the R.E.C.R.U.I.T.S., so I'm happy to have a page that features so many of them (Davroth Catto, Zena Moonstruk, Amon Hakk, Borb Borbb, Bertron Diib, and Darius's head), and I'm especially always happy to find another page with Vril Dox on it. Kolins and Percy put an impressive amount of detail into this page, and I find some of it gets a bit lost in the coloured final version, so I'm happy to share the original art so we can all admire the details as they were intended to be seen. I particularly enjoy the hatching on Darius's head in the first two panels, and all that glorious futuristic lab equipment in panel four.

Coming into the page without prior context those first 2 panels had me intrigued with the isolated head and circuitry in Vril's hands. Now I'm curious where Vril thinks Darius was produced with an AI chipset so advanced! If Kolins eventually became a main penciller for Legion then it's also a pretty cool addition for you to find even earlier work of his as a fill in on this related title as well. congrats on the find!

Welllll, considering you might not ever get more context unless I can find more pages from this issue, I'll give you a quick summary!  Vril deduces that Darius was created on Acheron, an outer-rim planet rumoured to harbour some of the most advanced cybernetic science in the galaxy.  When the R.E.C.R.U.I.T.S. get there, they find that Acheron is ruled by the cybergeneticist Mardok, who created Darius along with a whole host of other cybernetic lifeforms.  As it happens, Mardok is as cruel as he is evil, so the R.E.C.R.U.I.T.S. and a rebuilt Darius overthrow him, and Darius assumes Mardok's throne (reluctantly) with the hopes of creating a better life for Mardok's former subjects.

I heard it's from At Attin and it'll take a skeleton crew of young misfits to find this hidden planet.
