Legionnaires #50 pg 33 - Unused Page

This is a neat one! Jeff was selling this during the November 2025 Comic Art Live and had it listed as an "abandoned" page. If you compare it to the published page (see additional images), the panels are almost identical between them, just sized differently and placed differently on the page. It seems that Jeff pencilled this page here, and the writers or editors asked him to redraw it and make some slight changes. I asked him, and he can't remember why they wanted the page changed, but I'm sure happy to have a unique piece of Legionnaires art to add to my collection, so I'd say it all works out!

This page (and its published twin) was part of the extra-sized fiftieth issue of Legionnaires, which sees the Legion and their allies in final battle against the sorcerer Mordru. At the same time, the Legion is trying to rescue Shrinking Violet from the Emerald Eye, which has taken her as its host, all while Mordru is trying to bend the Eye to his will. This page comes after they've successfully separated Vi from the Eye, and after she's sent it away so Mordru won't get his hands on it. Here we see Kinetix rescuing her from Mordru, as Umbra uses her darkfield to disorient him. Legionnaires Invisible Kid, Live Wire, Magno, and Element Lad also make appearances, along with Particon (a member of the Workforce) and Sister Andromeda. Andy didn't appear in many comics after she went and became a space nun (and I can and WILL give you a ten thousand word essay on why I think that was a bad direction to take her character if you ask me for one), so I was really glad to have the opportunity to pick up a page with her on it, even if it's an unpublished one. Heck, I think I like this page better than the published one because Andy's facing forwards and more clearly visible.

My working theory is that the editors wanted the panels with the Legionnaires in action to be the more prominent ones on the page - maybe to make more room for the dialogue? - and figured the panels with Mordru in darkness could afford to be shrunken down. I think this really shows how well Jeff is able to replicate his own work, considering how similar the two pages are, especially since there's enough subtle differences in poses and expressions that I don't believe one was traced from the other. This page is also an awesome - and fairly rare - chance to get a look at Jeff's raw pencils, without Cory Carani's inks over top of them. You can see the blue pencil he uses for his layouts quite clearly here. I love how clean and tidy the pencils are, and of course, how much detail Jeff was able to fit in, even for the tiny figures of the Legionnaires in the background.

As a quick side note, I wasn't exactly sure how to classify this page. It's very, very similar to the actual published page, but I'd say it's more than a prelim, since it's a finished page and was originally intended to be the one used for inking and publishing. I'm following Jeff's lead on this one and classifying it as an unpublished interior page. Also, even though it's not published, it's going in my published Reboot Legion gallery, because it's a complete, detailed interior page, and I'd hate to relegate it to my prelim or commission gallery just because it isn't the final product.
