DescriptionFrom Colwell's intense look at street life in San Francisco, which addressed black life, prison, city poverty and activism. This is - by far - the largest piece of comic art I own. It measures a whopping 48" by 61.75", and is an oil painting that was difficult to photograph without a reflection - though the round bright spot in the middle is the painted reflection of the sun. This piece also appeared in the May 1980 issue of Heavy Metal.Social/Sharing |

Classic, memorable cover from Colwell. As skillful a painter as he is a storyteller and you get both with this piece, which feels like something that should be in the Lucas Museum. Did you pick it up from him?

I found it at a small auction house. I may have been the only bidder.

Great time capsule! People forget how brutal the summers were when the heavy pollution of that time period trapped the heat that not even coastal winds couldn't move. It's like the edges of the painting won't let the heat escape. I like how the guy just suggestively lets his popsicle hang out there.
