This page almost works as a model sheet for depicting the Thing. All it really needs is a front shot of Ben.
Love how the Thing is depicted here. His texture reminds me how he first appeared in FF #1. His expression on the bottom left panel is priceless!
So much to love about this page, and the way the Thing is drawn... My favorite is that bottom left panel!! I actually think Koblish is pretty underrated as an inker, and he did a great job on this one bringing the tone/atmosphere to the page... A great Grummett piece for the #1GrummettFan (hopefully Tom won't mind the name copy)
"Oatmeal Thing"?!? I think you mean "Mudball Thing"! Or is this a cross-border (lower-case "t") thing like "favourite" and "favorite"? One thing (upper or lower case, I suppose, take your pick) we can ~completely~ agree upon is that this is a SUPERB page. Tom's layout, pencils, and POVs provide a rock-solid backbone, and this setting and character really benefit from Scott's meaty inks. Even the colored page builds on the momentum and delivers a really striking and fun piece, at every stage of production! But you're right - that fifth panels is a show-stopper, able to upstage even the ~excellent~ first and fifth panel images of our rocky hero. SO good. And all told, this really must be ONE OF the most impressive Thing pages posted today... 😜 OUTSTANDING pick up, Rubén! Huge congrats!
Really cool page Ruben! love the layout of this page and the almost snapshot like pacing of it all. Im also really digging the way the Thing is placed in the environment; love the depth suggested from them. Agreed 4th panel is awesome, but for some reason Im loving that first and last panel after as well. Maybe its the pose or the way he's framed in the environment but I think theyre both super expressive as well. Overall major congrats on an awesome acquisition!
It's Grummettin' Time!!!!!
Nice page. I now understand the Grummet attraction. The shocked look on a rock creature in panel 4 is a standout.
Getting a modern page without word balloons is a bonus when they aren't on the published page either.(except the small tac tac tac)
The best Grummett collection around! Congrats on a great addition!
You've got a pretty thing there. Every panel a winner. Congrats!
Always love when Tom gets to play with the FF you can always tell they are close to his heart and characters he loves.
It's a thin of beauty!
Very cool, Ruben! All the different direction perspectives show off Thing's texture and the close-up image of him is superb!! Open mouth and wide-eyed! The color published version is just a nice to see with the shading that was added in the process. Congratulations!
Beautiful!
Super page! Grummett and Koblish infuse so much humanity into their Thing. Great faces, poses, and POVs in this page
I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one Thing I need
And I don't share all the Tom Grummetts
Underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need orange my rocks and
There upon the sewer page
Santa Claus won't make me live stream
With a joy on Christmas Day
I just want you on your own
More than you could ever know
Make Koblish come true
All I want for Christmas is you
You, Benji
Delightful page. Grummett gets much more out of Ben Grimm than most artists. I can see why it makes for such a great example.
I like looking at your Thing...post
Niiice there it is! Was wondering when this page might show up and with so much great Thing art being posted to CAF lately now is as good a time as ever! A really great page with so many aspects to like about it, especially for Thing/Grummett fans. The highly expressive face on Ben in panel 4 is practically perfect and I also like the reactive move he is making in panel 5, almost looks like a dance move/pose if seen completely out of context ha!
The whole page is great but my fav' panel is the first one by far. and I agree that the inks are very nice indeed.
Awesome page !
Your favorite artist and a wonderfully drawn as well as atmospheric page with great perspectives! Many congrats, Rubén!
Really a dynamic page. Congrats Ruben!
Awesome page...I really love that 4th panel..such a cool closeup!
Great page Rubén! Everything is so expertly rendered and composed that we also get the feeling that Ben isn't quite in his element down in these tunnels, and that really adds to the dramatic tension. Congrats!
Mmm... nothin screams Christmas like roasting rat nuts over an open fire.
I like the older school-ish lookin' Thing here, not 100% rocky with the completely seperated plates. That first panel kinda reminds me of a famous X-Man, in the sewers, announcing his upcoming revenge :) Another great Grumment, Ruben, congrats!
Oh my gosh, I am SO happy you got this one! Cuz I'm the one who put it in the ComicLink auction! Haha! What kismet. This was a very early acquisition for me. Don't know why I never posted it on CAF. Guess it slipped through the cracks. But I have always really liked it, so it was tough to let go. VERY glad it's in your collection now!
Lots of finesse on display here!
You've convinced me - I'm a Tom Grummett fan now.
Great looking page and yout Grummett collection is off to a good start! You should really check out his work on the younger men in tights themes you always gravitate to. I hear he is pretty dynamic on Superboy and Nightwing.
Love the first and fourth panels
That first panel is so good! Same with the expression at the bottom. Congrats Rubén!
Very cool page. The upper panels remind me of the original version of the Thing as well as Byrne's "old Thing" version when he was doing FF in the 80s. By the way, did I ever tell you that the Thing was one of my two favorite characters when I was a kid?
Brilliant FF page focussed on its most iconic character, the Thing. Gorgeous art by Tom Grummett and Scott Koblish allows us a glimpse at what's underneath Ben Grimm's rocky hide.
