Description
A sniper has been assassinating Mega City One Judges with a ‘solar rifle’. Judge Dredd is on the hunt for him, but the assassin thinks he has found a good place to hide. Unfortunately for him, he’s aiming to hide in a probe due to be launched – destination the Sun. (Presumably the chimp in the last panel is a clue to the launch, but it seems odd to have a futuristic suicide mission with a chimp on board.)

Ron Turner was a very established SF artist when he joined 2000AD, having produced illustrations for paperbacks stretching back to the 1950s. Notably, he drew and painted “The Daleks” strip in TV Century 21, along with episodes of Stingray, Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet in annuals and summer specials. On Dredd, his vision of the future has something of a 1950s/1960s SF feel, but his work on the strip really benefitted from his crisp lines and exceptional sense of space – seen especially in the opening panel here. The reflection of Dredd’s face in the mirror of his Lawmaster bike is a nice touch.

Exciting & cool page! I see what you mean about the 50s feel, certainly in that crushed car grill.

Damn that's a killer page!  All your 2000AD posts are bangers :) - and another artist's work I'm not that familiar with and am learning about through your post (much appreciated!).

Everyone needs to have some monkeys in their art collection. I seem to have a few.

It definitely feels like the 50's revival llike Happy Days and Grease car culture and black leather jackets.

A super cool sci-fi page in general, but add Dredd and you have a total winner!  Ron's style is beautifully layered and quite illustrative, giving the breakneck pacing here some real weight and substance.  I especially like the textures on the bottom half of the page, and that beat up car crashing through the window in panel 3 (the model of the vehicle spelled out along the driver's side is a brilliantly timeless, 2000 A.D. retro-future touch) is just superb (gnarled grille and all).  And, of course, the irony of the Solar Sniper being launched into the sun...?  Chef's kiss.  Beautiful and fun page, Paul - great pick up!

The balance of light and dark on the page is really great, and I love the camera flip from the first panel to the second.
