Description
Where to start with explaining this story? Nebulon planned to use a “Celestial Mind Control” movement, a self-help scam which robbed people of their free will, to take control of Earth. (It was the kind of Gerber plot that would have been equally at home in Howard the Duck.) In the guise of the bald and bespectacled “Mr Nebul”, he recruited followers who showed their devotion to the movement by admitting how they had previously behaved like “bozos” and wearing clown masks to atone. While Hulk is out searching for his pet baby deer, “Bambi”, (into which Doctor Strange inserted the mind of Chondu of the Headmen – don’t ask), he finds “Mr Nebul” promoting a self-help event and ends up in a fight with his alter-ego, Nebulon. He takes back to the Defenders a flier to the event, but can’t remember the name of the villain he fought.

Here, Doctor Strange, Valkyrie and the Hulk have infiltrated the “Bozo” initiation event, in disguise, and Strange confronts the mysterious “Mr Nebul”, demanding that he reveal his dastardly plan. And he begins to oblige the Sorcerer Supreme – but not without a fight!

Jim Mooney provided finishes to Sal’s layouts, and – as with the Pre-Defenders Sub-Mariner issues – he really seemed to enjoy that partnership.

Thanks to the fabulous Allan Burne for selling me this one.

Thanks Alessandro - happy memories for me too (although I wonder how much of the story I really understood when I was 8 years old)!

SHWAK! Yes, it's Valkyrie's footwork that makes the last explosive panel so dynamic. Thanks, Stephan!

"Curse your inability to recall names, Hulk!"  LOL, I have the same issue.

Ha ha! It's a seldom explored topic in superhero comics. "The Baxter Building is under attack! From... er... oh, you know. What's his name? Not the underwater one. The giant guy with the huge cylindrical helment. Damn it!".

Thanks Eelco. This was my favourite period, although I love the stories before this - and Scorpio afterwards. Gerber was just so imaginative.

Brilliant Defenders vs Nebulon content, silky Sal/Mooney art, classic Hulk dialogues, diversity of panel sizes and characters depicted - this page has so much to love!

Thanks, Kavi! As a child reading it for the first time, the panel in which Nebulon reveals himself was so exciting. The dialogue just gets funnier over time.

Nebulon was a great designed villian but with very strange plans and motivations. And you knew with Gerber that the story would alwys take a left turn. But still a great page!

True. Nebulon was a villain who could actually be reasoned with - which I guess played into Gerber's thoughts on what heroism and villainy were.

Ha ha! Well, Gerber would have seen that point of view as well. Why should it be up to the heroes to decide what's best for people?

You're right. Everyone can be called 'splodge' after Hulk has done his thing.

My first exposure to Nebulon was his profile page in the Book of the Dead issues of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition.  I recall reading his entry a couple of times because it was one of the more "out there" profiles.  So it's great to see original art pages of the character in action.

Thanks, Michael! Yes, 'out there' about sums it up. A villain who can be reasoned with and then walks away...

Thanks, Stephen. Still quite a few left - Sal is my favourite artists (and I think he counts for about 1 in 6 pages in my entire collection, worryingly). It really please me when I can share the art with fellow Sal (and Hulk) fans!

It's the classic Marvel team springing-into-action panel! But while lesser outfits had the likes of "Avengers Assemble!", the Defenders have "The explanation <villain>. Is it forthcoming?". Stirring stuff.

Thanks! The signature may well be from the pages Jim Mooney sold directly from his collection, probably more than twenty years ago now.

Thanks, Toni! I always loved the transformation panel, and yes - Valkyrie avoiding that blast as Hulk gets ready to pounce does make the page.

Fortunately it was there all along, thanks to an illusion cast by Strange. But explanations involving the word 'Strange' may not be helping as much as I'd like.
