Description

Blastaar first entered the Marvel Universe in 1967, in Fantastic Four #62 and #63. After another showing in X-Men #53 two years later, he then disappeared for 5 years, making this 1974 page only his fourth appearance (being seen only in shadow on the previous page).

Here, the snappily named Professor Paxton Pentecost has succeeded in freeing Blastaar from a ‘super strong’ plastic capsule, into which he was encased after his fight with the X-Men. This Marvel Team-Up issue is a Johnny Storm one (in his red costume), and to help defeat his old FF foe, he later enlists… the ever unreliable Hulk. Well, in Marvel Team-Up this was nowhere near the oddest pairing of heroes. How about Captain America and Jubilee fighting Nazi vampires?

Anyway, Kane serves up a great image of Blastaar and, in a recap sequence, a shot of him getting the better of the FF, with bodies flying everywhere. Giacoia’s inks are lovely too.

Thanks, Danny. It's such a bragging villain's pose.

I love when a great villain chews up the scenery.

Ha ha! I was surprised when I checked just how seldom Blastaar was given a run out at the scenery back in the '60s and '70s. But I guess he made the most of it when he was let loose.

I think there's a requirement in the Negative Zone that a villain must take a class in over dramatic acting before they are allowed to invade our universe.  Blastaar no doubt got an A+!  Another fabulous 1970s Marvel page in your collection!

Ha ha! Yes, there was never a shortage of understudies for Annihilus. Thanks, Michael.

That first panel's worth the price of admission alone!  Blastaar has returned...but in for a suprise.  Vintage Marvel storytelling goodness from Gil Kane!  Congrats!

Great page! Those MTU and Marvel Two in One books were always a fun read. Congrats

What a cool moment in MTU (and Marvel in general) history for the character! That opening panel image of Blastaar just feels so classic, and I really love the flashback panel included for his prior battle with the FF! congrats, this is a real gem!

Thanks Kavi! I love a story recap page. They tend to have a lot of action in them! ;-)

And the end of it as well, as I don't think the bad Professor was given another Marvel outing...

Great page by one of my all time favorite Marvel artists.  I loved MTU.  I still remember as a kid saving my money because my local comic shop was selling the first 25 issues as a set.  I do admit to being somewhat torn during those early issues when they would rotate between Spidey and Torch.  But I just loved the team-up concept and the stories were always fun.  Case in point.  This is a "fantastic" page with a somewhat under appreciated villain.  Awesome first and last panels.  Congrats!

Wow, those were the days - those first 25 issues would command a fine price now. MTU #25 was the first issue I read when it actually came out, rather than as a back issue. And yes, the whole teaming up / crossover thing was always exciting, and it added to that sense of there being one big family of Marvel heroes.

Buying the set was a bittersweet experience.  I didn't know better, so I didn't examine the books before I got home.  The cover to Issue #1 was detached from the top staple.  So the most valuable issue was actually worthless.  I tried to take it back, but they claimed it was not that way when they sold it.

As for issue #25, that one has a very special place in my heart.  Haven't looked at a new comic in almost two decades, but remember the old Letters Page in the back?  Well, I sent MTU a letter after reading issue #21 when it came out.  They published it in issue #25.  The only fan letter I ever got published.  I think I even still have the old postcard they sent me to notify me.

That's an incredible story! (The letters page, rather than the condition part.) I'll have to dig it out to read the letter! Congrats on getting it published.

And so underused despite his destructive potential - not to mention his theatrical potential. Thanks!

Really great with that 70's Gil Kane look for fans of evil doers!  He's not afraid to show their vulnerabilities along with what makes them so powerful!

Isn't that always the way?  You get freed from a super strong plastic capsule only to be suddenly overcome by a splitting headache that forces you to serve the needs of a diabolical Professor?  If I had a nickel for every time that has happened to me ... GREAT page!  Love that opening splashy panel of Blastaar and also that last awesome battle panel.

I really dig the self-contained quality of the page, and the storytelling is just fantastic! I can practically hear Blastaar's voice.
