Description

Namor and Doctor Strange find themselves in a mystical realm, where Queen Casiolena has charmed the Executioner and imprisoned the Enchantress and the Black Knight. On this page, the Executioner and an army of mystical knights are putting up some stiff opposition to the heroes, but Namor shows his mettle. Later in this issue, the Enchantress binds the spirit of the Valkyrie (Brunhilda) into the body of Barbara Norris.

McLaughlin’s inks are very fine and detailed here, especially on all of the mystical mist effects, while still adding a real Pop Art feel to Sal’s pencils. And Sal serves up a fine helping of Merry Marvel action.

Oh man, another Defenders banger! I LOVE that 2nd panel where you get the often used "opposing sides" of the battle trope on full display (in a great way!). Bronze Age Marvel at it's finest!

Stellar early example.  Love the almost cinematic panel sequence.  From an extreme close-up shot and right to the wide shot before all the action starts.  Totally agree about the McLaughlin inks.

My one BIG regret about these early Buscema Defenders pages is that I spent so many of my collecting years focused on covers and splashes, back when these early panel pages were so affordable.  And now they probably cost more than some of the recent covers I've purchased.  Talk about bad timing.

The Executioner without his axe?!  That's the only way these Defenders can win against him!
