Description

Toth created the gas-masked Fox, combining costume elements of the Wesley Dodds Sandman and the Shadow. Thanks to Will K and Chris Snorek for identifying the pencils.

The Fox doodle may be the closest I'll get to a Toth Sandman. Wesley Dodds had left the Golden Age All-Star Comics by the time Toth worked on the book early in his career. I haven't found the Sandman in Toth's subsequent DC work.

In MLJ/Archie comics, the Fox appeared in a black costume akin to Wildcat's from DC comics. Created by Joe Blair and Irwin Hasen in 1940, the black-costumed character first appeared in MLJ's Blue Ribbon Comics. In 1983 Toth did new stories of the black-clad Fox for the Archie imprint Red Circle in the short-lived Black Hood book.

These sketchbooks provided a lot of insight into what Toth was interested in, in his retirement.  Lot of noir and period movies apparently.  A lot of it was done in the same manner of animation design work.

Cool Toth doodles! Toth on GA Sandman is one a helluva "What If" but it's cool to see even at this sketchy phase what it might have been like.

Would of been so cool to see Toth do GA Sandman; these are pretty awesome! I always thought GA Sandman is one of the coolest looking designed characters in all of comics.

Any chance Toth did these drawing as concept work for the animation industry? Either way, it's really cool stuff!

I don't think that's Sandman. I think it's Toth's own creation (The Fox) who just happens to look identical to GA Sandman. Awesome piece!

Your sketch page had 3 panels to my one. These sketch book pages are priceless insight. Toth the master.
