David Sheridan, Mother Oats Comix issue 1 back cover (Rip Off Press 1969)

From the seminal underground comix Mother Oats issue 1 in 1969, the back cover image from Dave Sheridan. While the funny image shows an underground comic's reader's head exploding from reading "Far Out Funnies," given the upcoming 4th of July and 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence I wanted to post this and focus on the rockets/fireworks emanating from his four limbs.  Happy 4th everybody!

Mother Oats issue 1 is well-known for the debut of Sheridan's character Dealer McDope.  Dealer later interacted with Shelton's famous Fabulous Furry Freak brothers when Sheridan moved to help Shelton with the heavy Freak publishing load, although in Sheridan's art Dealer is always more trippy than the lazier Freaks.  I posted two Dealer pages from this issue before.  Dealer also starred in a board game published by Last Gasp.  As with all things Dealer or Freak, they are best enjoyed with a casual helping of marijuana.  Given Dealer's capitalist tendencies, I picture him in 2026 running a Starbucks-like chain of now-legal weed shops across the West Coast.

Perhaps overindulgence led to the misuse of "you're" for "your" in the text, although people still routinely make that mistake to this day ...
