DescriptionI find it rather hard to believe that I have much to say about this modest drawing of Dirty Bill -- but I do. I am not sure that this and the following drawings are mere studies. At least in the period from 1934 through 1935, Disney's first publicity artist, Tom Wood, would typically do figure studies and then compositiional studies of groups of figures, before drawing the final illustration, complete with all figures and all background details. But it appears that he ran out of time for finishing his pencil art for The Robber Kitten book, as seen by the summary nature of the drawings of the Robber Kitten as he escapes from his bath. These two drawings of Dirty Bill and Robber Kitten are very finished in appearance, but there are no indications that they were the final drawings for the illustration in the book where the Robber Kitten recognizes Dirty Bill based on a wanted poster. All of my drawings for the book were sold together when they were auctioned at Christie's East in NY in 1987. I had heard of the group of drawings for a few years, but I could never track them down. As a group, they seems typical of all the groups of Tom Wood's work that I have seen or heard about; There were a number of the totally complete, final drawings plus an equal or greater number of single figures and other drawings which seem developmental in nature (such as a very minor drawing of the Robber Kitten's hat). But I had never seen incomplete drawings with page number indications on them prior (or even since) to the time I bought this Robber Kitten group. One other interesting fact about this particular drawing. It was used as the illustration for the entire lot of drawings in the catalogue for the Christie's animation auction. Even if the cataloguer knew absolutely nothing about this cartoon, or Disney art in general, I cannnot understand how anyonne looking at the group of 25+ drawings would pick this one, with a single figure at the far side of the sheet of paper, over any of the finished drawings (including my favorite, of the Robber Kitten in his bath tub) to represent the drawings that were being sold. But who are we to judge?Social/Sharing |
